Arthur and Margaret's Place

Arthur and Margaret's Place

For the past few years I have been working on a project on the Dublin docklands, including the port industry (container ships, ferries, warehouses, etc.) and the surrounding areas. One day I drove out what's called the East Wall, a landfill that stretches beyond the port and the old Poolbeg power station (still known by its 18th century name, The Pigeonhouse). Its two red and white chimneys, like enormous Manchester United goalposts, are a familiar Dublin landmark, one of the first things ferry passengers arriving from Holyhead catch sight of.

Out here, the nearby city can seem strangely distant. Sand drifts across the road and pools along the edges like the dregs of a dessicated ocean. Looking south, across the great scoop of Sandymount Strand and Dublin Bay, you can see the towns of Blackrock and Dun Laoghaire and beyond them the low-lying Dublin and Wicklow mountains. The place has a wildness and beauty, and also a sense of desolation, abandonment; there are often burned-out cars in the carpark at the end of the beach. Yet it is also a favourite spot for walkers, bird-watchers, kite-surfers, etc. On this occasion, just around the corner from the carpark, I saw two young men fishing and a few strollers on the walkway; also a couple eating their lunch in the carpark, while a big container ship bulked smoothly past.

On the way back I passed a couple of traveller caravans for the second time. I took a chance and asked a man in a doorway if he'd mind me taking some photos. Arthur turned out to be very gracious and friendly (despite his formidable appearance), as was his wife Margaret and their little girl, far more hospitable than I would be if a stranger with a camera turned up on my doorstep. They have quite a few children (I would meet different ones each time I called), but on this occasion only one of the girls consented to have her portrait taken. The couch was already in place; there were other items of furniture on the beach, including part of another suite, an old TV, etc., partly, as I understood, for the younger children to play with. I hadn't come prepared (I didn't have a flash or tripod with me), yet this is probably the strongest portrait I took of them.

A few weeks, maybe a couple of months, might pass before I called round again to take some more shots. Each time called I gave them copies of the photographs from the previous visit, except for the last time, over a year ago, when I found their site deserted. I haven't seen them since.
